Electric or engine-powered: which really pays off
The choice between an electric wheelbarrow and a mini dumper with a combustion engine depends on where and how much you work. These are the factors that make the difference, including the limits of electric power.
1. Running costs
A full charge uses about 1.5 kWh: at €0.30/kWh it costs less than 50 cents. An engine-powered mini dumper, on the other hand, uses about 1 litre of fuel per hour, i.e. about 8 litres in an 8-hour day: with petrol at €1.90/litre, that is about €15. These are indicative values that depend on tariffs and use.
2. Maintenance
An electric motor has no oil, filters, spark plugs or belts to replace. Maintenance comes down to checking tyres, brake and cables, and looking after the battery properly.
3. Emissions and noise
With no exhaust fumes you can work in greenhouses, stables, warehouses and enclosed spaces. Low noise lets you start early in residential complexes, apartment blocks and built-up areas, in compliance with local regulations.
4. The limits of electric
Autonomy depends on the battery: 8 to 12 hours stated, reduced by heavy loads and climbs. After that it needs charging, or a spare battery on models with a removable one. On deep mud and very soft ground, and for loads above the rated capacity, tracked engine-powered mini dumpers remain the most suitable solution.
5. Lead-acid or lithium battery
Lead-acid costs less and suits regular use with full recharges. Lithium offers more autonomy, faster charging, lower weight and more life cycles.
6. Safety
Slope limits depend on the load and are given in the documentation of each product. Always travel in a straight line, without turning or stopping across the slope, and never stand between the machine and the downhill side.
| Electric wheelbarrow | Engine-powered mini dumper | |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust emissions | Zero | Yes |
| Indoor use | Yes | No |
| Noise | Very low | Higher |
| Energy cost per day (indicative) | Less than €1 | About €15 of fuel |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Oil, filters, spark plugs |
| Autonomy | 8–12 hours, then charging | Unlimited with refuelling |
| Mud and soft ground | On wheels, for compact surfaces | Tracked, for difficult ground |
Is an electric wheelbarrow really better value than a petrol one?
It pays off if you work often, indoors or in residential areas. The purchase price can be similar or slightly higher, but the cost of electricity is a fraction of the cost of fuel and maintenance is minimal. For very muddy ground or very heavy loads, a tracked engine-powered mini dumper is still preferable.
How much can you save in a year?
It depends on use. As an example, with 150 working days a year, about €15 of fuel per day against less than €1 of electricity, the saving on fuel alone exceeds €2,000, not counting oil, filters and servicing. Actual values vary with tariffs and how intensively you work.
Can it be used in a greenhouse or stable?
Yes: it produces no exhaust fumes and is quiet, so it is suitable for enclosed spaces, near crops and animals. Always charge the battery in a dry, ventilated place.
Is an electric wheelbarrow powerful enough?
The electric motor delivers full torque from a standstill, so it pulls away firmly even when fully loaded. The limits to respect are the rated load stated for each model and the slope limits by load.
What happens if the battery runs flat while working?
The charge indicator lets you plan your return before the battery runs out. On models with a removable battery, simply swap it for a second charged battery and carry on working.
Does the battery work in the cold?
Yes, but at low temperatures autonomy is reduced, as with all batteries. In winter it is best to keep the machine or battery under cover and charge it at room temperature.
Can it be charged with a solar PV system?
Yes: it charges from a normal household socket, so with a solar PV system you can charge during the day using the energy you produce, cutting costs even further.
What slopes can it work on?
The limits change with the load and are given in the documentation of each product, in the operating manual or in the slope table by load. With heavy loads, travel on level ground only.
